Empowering you to live your healthiest life.
Imagine feeling and looking your best, and knowing that you are eating the most powerful foods for great health at any age. We all deserve that! But there is so much conflicting and confusing information to navigate and it can be hard to know where to start.
In my career as a physician, I have seen firsthand the damage that a "Standard American Diet" can cause, as well as the transformative power of food as medicine to reverse that course.
But at home, as a wife and mother of four boys, I have also lived through the very real challenges of changing our family's diet, and finding wholesome and healthy foods that they would actually eat.
Guided by my experience in medicine as well as my own personal journey, I offer individualized coaching and support to help you transform your own health, and even that of your loved ones.
Did you know that the same foods that can reverse heart disease also lower the risk of breast and colon cancer? Most of us fear common chronic diseases and their complications- diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and the list goes on. Amazingly, the same diet can prevent and in many cases reverse these. And yet we all have unique challenges and goals to take into account.
A nutrition plan will be tailored specifically for you, based on your health concerns, tastes, allergies, and budget.
Sustainable changes have to fit into your lifestyle. I know it's not always easy to prioritize yourself, especially when others are counting on you at work and at home. Keep in mind that preparing healthier food does not have to take more time, or cost more money. I am here to guide you and make your goals reachable. From grocery shopping, label-reading, and meal-planning, to exercise and fitness goals- getting and staying healthy has a positive impact on everyone around you!
Welcome!
Thank you for taking your time to get to know me! I am happy to share my story, and I truly hope I can help!
When I started medical school in 2000, I was nervous but excited to be on the path to my dream career. Those turned out to be four amazing years of learning and growth in sunny Miami, Florida. I then "matched" into a unique program in New York that combined residencies in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. Over those five years, I trained in hospitals and clinics where countless patients suffered from chronic illnesses- diabetes, coronary artery disease, obesity, and high blood pressure, to name a few. My training taught me how to manage these conditions mainly with medications and invasive procedures. In fact, one of my co-residents was patiently reviewing a procedure with me when, in a bit of real life "Grey's Anatomy" a relationship sparked. We later married, and we kept working and learning, ultimately choosing different career paths while we raised our family. Only after all those years of training did we come across the Forks Over Knives documentary. This powerful film presents what felt at the time like shocking proof that chronic diseases can be prevented, managed, and in some cases even reversed with a whole-foods, plant-based diet. I wondered why none of this was part of my traditional medical education. Starting with myself and my husband, I decided that we needed to embrace this lifestyle if we wanted to stay fit and healthy for ourselves and for our growing family. At first, this was extremely challenging. We barely had time to shop or cook, did not always get to eat together, and frankly, did not know what to make! But I committed to studying nutrition in medicine, and slowly built a repertoire of recipes that worked.
After my residency, I completed a fellowship and board certification in Allergy and Immunology and spent over a decade at a multispecialty practice. Diagnosing food allergies and distinguishing between food allergies (which are immune-mediated, and can be dangerous) and intolerances (which are not immune-mediated) provided daily opportunities to work with patients on healthier eating, both from an allergy perspective and with the lens of their overall health. For example, concerns about dairy allergy are quite common, and in some cases represent true allergy. But often, the question stems from patients’ gastrointestinal discomfort after consuming dairy. Lactose intolerance affects a staggering 65% of adults worldwide! Knowing that so many of us cannot digest dairy without significant GI upset, and knowing that dairy is the top source of artery-clogging saturated fat in Americans’ diets, makes it both my obligation and my pleasure to get the word out that there are so many healthier (and more humane) alternatives. Similarly, while many patients came seeking guidance on skin conditions, respiratory allergies or asthma, they were often dealing with other diseases such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, obesity, and high blood pressure. Considering adding another allergy medication to these long lists of medications was depressing. Many of my patients were unaware that their chronic conditions could be reversed with diet, and I took every opportunity to educate them on the benefits of nutrition and lifestyle change. I think on some level many of us are aware that the diets we grew up on are making us sick, and yet it takes knowledge and confidence to break the mold and find our way forward.
That young and hopeful medical student in me had never heard the words "plant-based," but the commitment to doing my best for my patients never changed. I feel lucky to have had the resources that early experts in lifestyle medicine provided, such as obtaining the certificate in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, and the certificate in Remission of Type 2 Diabetes and Reversal of Insulin Resistance from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has amazing resources that I reference daily.
As spreading my knowledge of health and nutrition became my passion, I chose to focus on nutrition and lifestyle coaching. For those with food allergies, in addition to safe avoidance, my approach involves providing alternatives that are optimal for your overall health. There is nothing more satisfying than teaching others how to live their healthiest and most productive lives. I look forward to working with you!
